Chapter 2: Some Friendly Advice

“Well, well, well,” Kurz said as he walked up behind Sousuke in the officer’s lounge aboard the Tuatha de Danaan. ”If it isn’t Sergeant Sober.” They had just finished a mission; one Sousuke had opted to volunteer for, and he was relaxing for a minute before heading back to Tokyo.

“Sergeant Weber,” Sousuke replied with a nod as Kurz took a seat next to him.

“How’s Tokyo life treatin’ ya?”

Sousuke looked up his facial expression blank. “Confusing,” he said looking back down at his half filled glass of water.

“Lemme get a beer,” he called to bartender. “What’s so confusing about it, buddy?” He grabbed the bottle from the bartender and took a huge gulp.

“I kissed her, Kurz,” Sousuke blurted out bluntly.

Kurz spit his mouthful of beer out all over the counter. “What?” he exclaimed choking. “Who did you kiss?” he asked with wide eyes.

“Miss Chidori,” he replied looking up at Kurz.

“You kissed Kaname?!” he asked in amazement.

“She called me an idiot,” he said solemnly looking back down at his hands on the counter.

Kurz chuckled lightly. “Well, what happened?”

Sousuke recounted the entire evening to Kurz not leaving out a single detail. By the end of the story Kurz was hanging onto his every word, amazed and intrigued. “You just left?” he asked in confusion.

“I kissed her, Kurz,” he reminded him.

Kurz giggled again but this time he knew what to say. “Look, Sousuke,” he began. “If you haven’t noticed that Kaname likes you yet, then you really are an idiot.” Sousuke looked up with shock. “Don’t you think it’s about time you admitted to her how you feel?”

“How I feel?” Sousuke asked his eyes filled with bewilderment.

“You really don’t know, do you?” Kurz asked with a grin. “You’re in love, Sousuke.”

Sousuke looked across the bar into the mirror behind all the many different colored bottles at himself. “In love?” Astonishment crossed his face.

“Yeah, man,” he said slapping Sousuke on the back. “We’ve all known it for a long time. You can’t fool us!”

“I’m in love with Miss Chidori?” he asked in a low tone. How could he be in love? he asked himself. He wasn't even sure what the emotion entailed let alone understood how it felt. Why was he not aware of this? How could he not see it?

“Go back to Tokyo, get her some flowers, tell her how you feel,” Kurz explained. “Then...” Kurz’ eyebrows jolted up and down teasingly.

Sousuke stared back unknowingly. “Is something wrong with your eyes?”

“Oh my God, Sousuke!” Kurz exclaimed. “You really have no idea about this stuff, do you?”

Sousuke just stared back.

“You have to compliment her, say something nice,” Kurz told him. “Tell her how pretty she is.”

Sousuke stiffened considerably, his eyes wide. “I could never tell her that!”

“Sure you can,” Kurz said with a devilish grin. “Tony, come over and help me teach Sousuke something.”

A burly man sitting across the room got up and walked over to them. “What is it, Weber?” he asked with gruff tone.

“I need to show Sousuke here how to treat a lady,” he said with a wink. “Help me out here.”

Tony shrugged and sat down at the closest table and stared over at Kurz with a silly grin. “Buy me a drink, sailor?” Tony asked in a high pitched voice.

Kurz made a disgusted face. “The things I do for my friends,” he muttered sitting across from Tony. “Okay, she’s sitting there, she’s expecting me to say something. I should say something nice, like, “Your eyes are like drops of sunshine in the darkness of my life.”

“Weber!” a female scratchy voice yelled from the doorway. “You are pathetic!”

“Sergeant Major Mao,” Kurz said standing up with a heated glance in her direction. “Now that’s a lot more like it,” he said saucily. “Sorry Tony,” he added with a wink.

“No woman is going to buy, ‘Your eyes are like drops of sunshine in the darkness of my life’. Blech!” Melissa said in a mock tone. “No wonder you can’t get laid.”

Kurz blushed considerably, looking embarrassed. “You haven’t said yes yet,” he replied sheepishly.

Melissa just reached out and punched him square in the face knocking him to the floor. “Idiot,” she swore. “Sousuke, you have to be honest with her. Tell her exactly how you feel. Women like when a guy can tell her like it is.”

Sousuke stared at her his face like a stone. He had no idea what she was saying. Melissa kind of figured that much when he didn’t respond. “Take her to dinner, show her a good time...then when its time to say goodnight, tell her you want to confess something to her.”

“How about dinner, Sergeant Major?” Kurz mumbled from the floor. She kicked him in the face with her boot. “She loves me,” he groaned.

“Dinner,” Sousuke whispered. Maybe Chidori would like a night out away from everyday life. “And a movie?” he asked Melissa.

“Sure!” she exclaimed with a bright smile, a cigarette dangling from her lips.

“Dinner and a movie it is,” he said standing up proudly. They were always walking around together but it had never occurred to him to ask her to do something casual.

“Go get her, tiger,” Melissa said as he walked out the door.

Kurz made a growling sound and Melissa rolled her eyes. “Weber, you’ll never learn,” she said walking off.

“But you love me!” Kurz called rubbing his newly acquired sore chin.

Sousuke walked down the submarine hallways with only one thought wracking his brain; asking Chidori to go out with him casually. This would be difficult, he thought. He wasn’t quite sure what to say. Her temper could be something to fear and after their last encounter, he wasn't even sure she would speak to him anymore.

He decided he would be outright like Melissa told him. Be completely upfront and frank, he thought as he packed up his belongings. What’s the worse that could happen?
