Chapter 3: A Dinner Proposal?

Kaname was just settling in for the evening with a book she had always meant to read when a knock sounded at her door. She glanced over her annoyance very apparent on her face as she grumbles lightly. “Why does someone always interrupt me when I want to read?” she mumbled walking to the door. “This better be important!” she called swinging the door open.

“Sousuke,” she said lowly, shock in her eyes.

“Chidori” he said holding his straight pose, hoping his composure would not falter.

“What are you doing here?” she sneered crossing her arms over her chest.

“I would like to apologize for my behavior two nights ago,” he stated as if he were addressing his commanding officer. “It was completely out of line and it won’t happen again.”

That hurt, she thought as she let her arms drop to her sides. But he didn’t realize what he was saying, did he? Did he mean he didn’t like kissing her? Was he ashamed of it? She was so confused! He wasn't the easiest guy to read and it was beginning to annoy her. She wanted to scream out how she felt.

“Why do you do that?” she asked swiftly spinning around, her back to him.

“I don’t understand,” he whispered his brow creasing.

“You big idiot,” she said her voice wavering slightly.

There wasn’t any movement for several seconds and just as she was about to turn around she felt his hands settle on her shoulders. Every nerve in her body immediately jumped alive and she froze instantly. This is what she wanted, right? She wanted to feel his arms around her holding her close like he did two nights ago. She didn’t care if it was sinful or inappropriate. This was something she refused to deny herself any longer. It was beginning to eat her up inside.

Quickly she spun around and threw her arms around him, her hands splayed across his back, her fingers bunching the fabric of his shirt, her face buried in his chest. Nothing could have stopped the tears that began to well in her eyes.

“Kaname,” he whispered lightly. He closed his eyes and tried to remember what he should do. He should hold her too, he thought. Then he realized something; he not only aught to hold her...he wanted to. His arms instinctively came around her, slowly tightening snugly.

It was a foreign sensation having her so intimately close to him, her body pressed against his. She felt warm and soft, and her hair smelled of spring flowers, the kind he always ignored. But it was different coming from her delicate light hair and he inhaled deeply savoring the fragrance.

“I do not know what to do, Kaname,” he said resting his chin on the top of her head.

She was crying again, he could feel the tears soaking through his shirt. He had made her cry again, he thought. Why was he always doing this? When all he really wanted to do was make her smile, make her feel safe, keep her alive.

But why? he asked himself. Why was it so important to him that she be protected by him only? What made her different than any other mission? His emotions were swirling in his head and he couldn’t keep his thoughts straight. Compliment her, his mind echoed.

“Your hair is...like the night sky after a nuclear explosion,” he said running his fingers through a loose strand.

Kaname stiffened lifting her head, a confused expression on her face. She looked like she was about to cry again but instead busted out laughing. “Oh Sousuke! You are so weird!” she exclaimed between fits of laughter.

“Huh?” he said looking down at her his own confusion clouding his eyes.

After she finished laughing, she sighed heartily. “What are you trying to say, Sousuke?” she asked girlishly.

He physically tensed looking over her head avoiding her questioning gaze. “Permission to speak freely?!” he blurted out falling back into his usual comfort zone of subordinate.

“Go ahead,” she whispered flexing her fingers on his back.

Relaxing considerably, he finally looked down at her. “I don’t understand what I feel when I’m with you, Kaname. Sometimes when I look at you my head spins and I can’t concentrate. I have never felt this way before and I am very confused.” He paused slight then blurted out, “Sergeant Weber says I’m in love with you.”

Her eyes flew open in surprise and she pushed away from him without thinking. “Why would he say such a thing?”

“Kaname,” he said taking a step toward her. “If wanting to be the best man I can be means that I’m in love with you...” he said pausing again. “Then I am.”

Her cheeks flushed red and she suddenly felt very short of breath. Chills swept up her spine to her scalp and she felt numb from head to toe. He had just admitted that he was in love her, she thought. She couldn’t speak right now even if she wanted to.

Deep brown eyes of sincerity stared at her as she shivered physically before him. “Sergeant Major Moa told me to be honest with you,” he added lightly.

“She did...” Kaname said her voice finally returning.

“That night in Khanka, you said you could do anything as long as you knew I was there,” he continued. “Chidori, when I’m with you I feel the same way. I feel like I could kill a thousand enemies, conquer all my enemies, take down anyone.”

“Sousuke-”

He stepped forward taking her hand in his and holding it front of them. “What I want to say is...what I mean is...” he stammered feeling sweat bead on his temples once again.

She stared up at him watching the emotions cross his face her own flooding her entire body and soul like raging tidal wave.

He felt himself tense and his nerve cower slightly. “What’s I’m trying to say is..." He couldn't get the words out! "Will you accompany me to dinner tomorrow evening?!" he blurted out once again returning to his militant stance.

“Sousuke, you want to take me out to dinner?” she asked confused.

“Is that not alright?” he asked glancing down at her worried.

“No!” she exclaimed. “That is perfectly fine! I would love to go to dinner with you!”

He sighed with relief. “Then it is settled. Our first date will commence at nineteen hundred hours tomorrow evening. I will promptly pick you up at the scheduled time. Is this acceptable?”

She giggled. “Sure,” she said.

Their first date. The words echoed in her mind like a church bell. This evening couldn’t have more awkward if they were both standing there naked. She blushed at the thought.
