Kaname paced in her living-room her nerves at an all time high. It didn’t matter how many times she told herself that Sousuke was the most harmless man to go out with, she still felt extremely nervous. Was it because it was Sousuke? she asked herself. Would she act this frazzled if it were anyone else?
Since the first day he came to Jindai High she had felt something for him. At first she wasn't even sure what it was but then every night as she laid awake in bed, all she could think about was him; the way he walked, the stupid things he said, the way he always managed to blow something up. It used to make her giggle. That’s when she realized how she really felt about him.
And then those feelings turned from simple admiration to a deep need to have close at all times. And not just because she didn’t feel safe without him around, because she needed to feel him by her side. She needed to know he was just across the street watching her from that drab little apartment of his.
She had bought a new outfit and she wasn’t even sure why. She knew he wouldn’t notice and snorted haughtily as she checked herself for the fifteenth time in the mirror.
The knock at the door made her physically jump and she knocked over the vase that sat on the table. He was here, she thought as she nervously picked the vase up and sat it back in place. Her hand actually trembled as she reached for the doorknob.
Then he was standing there in the doorway, his physique more apparent to her than usual. She let her eyes take a peek down the front of his shirt just before the waistband of his trousers. She froze as a blush suddenly formed on her cheeks.
“Chidori,” he said holding up a bouquet of colorful flowers for her.
She wanted to hop into his arms and kiss him desperately but instead grabbed the flowers and placed one hand on her hip impatiently. “You’re late,” she said agitated.
He stiffened nervously. “I am sorry!” he swiftly replied his eyes widening
“Relax, Sousuke, I’m only teasing,” she said with a giggle. “I’m gonna put these in water,” she added with a smile walking to the kitchen.
He had been in her apartment countless times, so why was this time different, he thought as he stepped inside. It was as if he were behind enemy lines without radio communications. He quickly scanned his brain trying to remember what Kurz and Mao had told him to do. Something about her hair? Her clothes? Her tactical maneuvers on the field? “No,” he whispered to himself shaking his head.
“What’s that?” she asked her voice cheerful and calm as she filled a vase with tap water.
“Uh...nothing!” he said nervously.
“These are beautiful,” she said placing them inside the vase. She leaned down and deeply inhaled their fragrant perfume closing her eyes. “Mmm, what are they?”
“They are a rare double Lilium I had flown in from a private nursery in Italy,” he informed her. “The woman on the phone assured me that ‘any woman in her right mind would love these’,” he said with a straight face.
She froze in her stance her mouth slightly gaping open with shock. He had flowers ordered from another country just for her...tonight. Not only had that probably cost him a lot of money but the meaning behind that kind of sentiment was far too clear. Her legs suddenly felt very numb. He couldn’t possible know what this kind of gift could mean to a girl, could he?
He studied her stunned expression as worry began to build inside him. “Don’t you like them?” he asked a little scared.
She snapped out of it. “Yes! They are amazing! I was just...I mean I thought...”
“Is something wrong Chidori?” he asked noting that same familiar redness spread across her face.
“Where are we going tonight?” she blurted out trying to hide her embarrassment.
“I thought we could go to a movie.” Why did she change the subject? he thought curiously. “I have never been to the cinema.”
She straightened in her stance and placed her hands on her hips with an annoyed sigh. “You have to leave all your weapons here.”
“I cannot properly protect you if I—ow,” he said as she whacked him over the head with her fan.
“I mean it Sousuke! All it takes is one wild misunderstanding and you have a gun shoved in some innocent old lady’s face!”
“She looked like she was going to pull out a weapon,” he said in his own defense.
“This is your whole problem, Sousuke,” she began impatiently. “Not everyone is some secret agent determined to attack you. You need to learn how to relax and enjoy yourself.”
“I enjoy myself with you,” he stated plainly.
Her demeanor changed instantly as she looked at him her eyes holding that usual stunned expression. “You do?”
“We...should get going,” he said quickly urging her to the door.
“What are we going to see?” she asked as he shut the door behind them.
“I am not sure. Kurz suggested that you should pick the movie...” he muttered as they walked off.
Kurz snickered from across the street in Sousuke’s window. He held the binoculars tightly as Melissa tried to shove him out of the way. “Move you idiot, I can’t see,” she rasped wickedly.
Kurz laughed devilishly. “Score one for the guys,” he said in an assured tone.
Melissa just sighed angrily and grabbed the binoculars. “He better stick to the plan. Knowing Sousuke, he’s going to screw this up big time.”
Kurz stood up, one corner of his mouth turned up in a boyish grin. “Not if I can help it. I’ve been trying to get him laid since the first day we met.”
“Where are you going?” Melissa growled over her shoulder still watching through the binoculars.
“Sousuke needs backup on the field,” he said closing the door behind him.
“Kurz, don’t you dare!”
