Chapter 5: Kiss Me You Fool!

They sat in the theater quietly as the lights flickered across the room from the vast screen. She glanced over at him and had to giggle because his face was so stern and yet had such concentration on it he looked ready to scream. He looked kind of cute, she thought, not that she didn’t think he was handsome to begin with. But seeing him out of sorts made him appear more human, more laid back, more the real man he was under that military shield he always put up in front of people.

She decided she liked the pure innocence that shown on his face as he watched the film, engrossed by the characters and happenings. She had picked a film about the military in hopes it would make his first experience more enjoyable and from the looks of him she knew that to be true.

She turned her attention back to movie and was just about to settle back when he bolted out of his seat and exclaimed, “What are you doing? Regroup and head south to the designated checkpoint! You’re compromising the mission!”

“Sousuke...” she said grabbing his arm and dragging him back into his seat. Her actions were followed by several annoyed viewers shushing him from behind.

“They will not make it back alive,” he said looking over at her his voice a little lower.

She wasn't sure why but the look in his eyes made her quiver inside. He looked so concerned and upset over the movie it was endearing. His eyes twinkled with the light of the screen and she closed her eyes trying to mask her true feelings.

Quickly, she wrinkled her brow and spat out, “You have to be quiet, you military freak. Other people are trying to watch the movie.” He nodded acceptingly and turned back to watch the screen.

Several minutes later, she leaned over and whispered, “I’ll be right back.”

“Where are you going?” he asked not mindful of the loudness in his voice. Several more shushes followed again from the spectators around them.

A very red blush rose to her cheeks and she was thankful it was dark in the theater so he didn’t see it again. “I have to use the ladies room,” she whispered looking away awkwardly.

“I will come with you,” he said about to stand but she stopped him.

“No!” she stated loudly herself and got shushed by everyone too. “I won’t be long, I promise.”

Before he could protest further she was gone and he began feeling more fearful than ever for her safety. He laid one hand protectively on the nine millimeter side arm he had tucked safely in his waistband. Just as he was about to stand up and go after her, he felt a hand rest on his shoulder.

“Relax, Commando,” Kurz whispered behind him. “Mao’s hiding in the lobby keeping an eye on her right now.”

“Sergeant Weber,” Sousuke whispered astonished.

“Couldn’t let you have all the fun, now could I?” Kurz joked in a low tone. “Did she like the flowers?”

“Affirmative,” Sousuke replied not turning around.

“Works every time,” Kurz chuckled knowingly. “Have you kissed her yet?” Once again Sousuke stiffened in his seat his nerves jolting awake in embarrassment. “You’re gonna have to kiss her, man. The theater is the perfect place.”

“Like you explained?” he asked as sweat beaded on his face.

“Yeah, just like I explained. Trust me, lover-boy, she’ll melt in your arms,” Kurz said with confidence. “I gotta go before she comes back,” he added slinking off back into the darkness.

The way Kurz had explained it to him just seemed so wrong to him. It just reeked of disrespect and he wasn't sure if he could go through with it. Suddenly, as if someone were sending him a top-secret transmission, the main hero of the movie swept up the leading lady and kissed her passionately. Sousuke watched intently, studying every small detail; where he should put his hands, how he should hold her, that he should tilt his head slightly to one side.

Is it getting hot in here? he asked himself. The room seemed like it was suddenly boiling and he tugged nervously at the collar of his shirt. What if she didn’t like it? he thought. She seemed to enjoy their first kiss, almost molding into his arms like a well crafted AK-47 assault rifle.

He spotted her coming down the isle and tension began building inside of him. This was it, the moment of truth, when he kissed Kaname the way Kurz had explained. He prepared himself for the worst and stood straight up his limbs feeling numb and weak.

Mustering as much strength as he could find he reached out the instant she was in range, and pulled her possessively into his arms just like in the movie.

“Hey buddy, move it!” someone shouted from behind them.

“Sousuke, what are you doing?” Kaname exclaimed in shock her eyes wide.

“Get a room you perverts!” someone else shouted from the back row.

Just as he was about to swoop down and claim her lips in a passionate kiss, someone chucked a bag of popcorn at his head and little white pieces went flying in every direction. He stood there unable to move his embarrassment evident. Abort, abort, his mind screamed. The mission has failed. Retreat the sector and return to base.

Swiftly he swooped her up into his arms and carried her out of the theater into the lobby. But the minute he set her back down on her feet she thwacked him over the head with her fan again. “What the heck is wrong with you!” she screamed so loud the concession guy ducked behind the counter out of fear.

“Kaname, I...”

“Are you out of your mind?” she screamed even louder. “What was it this time, the guy behind us was really a ninja and he had swords hidden under his cloak? I know, the usher is really an undercover agent for some communistic organization and you forgot your ammunition!” She stood there tapping her foot her face red with rage.

“I’m sorry,” was all he said walking across the lobby with his head hung low. He sat down on the bench and sighed heavily his face hidden from her view.

She suddenly felt like the world’s biggest jerk. She was always giving him a hard time when all he was doing was trying to protect her. Dammit, she swore to herself. She wanted to whack herself with the fan; she deserved it more than he did.

Nothing he did was right, he thought. Following orders came easy to him. But finding the courage to kiss the woman he desired most in the world and he crumbled like rookie in boot camp. Why?

He felt her hand touch his face and his head jolted up to find her kneeling on one knee before him, her eyes apologetically staring up at him. “Sousuke,” she whispered lightly her lips parting slightly. He reached out cupping her cheek as his heartbeat sped up quickly making him feel like the room was spinning around him.

The concession clerk leaned on the counter resting his chin in his palm with a dreamy expression, Kurz right beside him with the same love-struck expression. “If you do anything to mess this up, I’ll cap your ass so fast you won’t know what hit you.” The clerk froze, his eyes wide in shock and fear.

He took her hand in his and stood up bringing her with him. “I don’t want to disrespect you, Kaname,” he said honestly.

“What do you mean?” she asked her eyes wide with confusion.

“I’m taking you home,” he said casting a glance towards Kurz. Kurz whacked his palm to his forehead and shook his head in defeat letting out a disgusted groan.

The entire way home not one word was spoken. She kept glancing towards him hoping for one small reaction from his stone cold demeanor but he didn’t flinch once. And when they reached her door she felt like crying her heart ached so much. She was so confused about why he was being this way and she couldn’t rationalize it this time.

She spun around her back to the door about to give him a piece of her mind when she suddenly found herself in his arms again. His face was so close to hers she could feel his warm breath on her cheek. He looked so serious, his eyelids heavy as he gazed down into hers.

He brushed his lips over hers in a light single kiss and she felt like the air in her lungs disappeared immediately. It seemed like an eternity that they stood there in a lovers embrace, the crickets singing in the distance melodically before he pulled back slightly releasing her.

“Kissing you in front of an entire theater of civilians would have been a very disrespectful thing to do,” he told her his voice unwavering.

She stood there as the shock wore off and irritation set in. “You big jerk! I thought you were mad at me!” she screamed and it echoed through the night sky. The next thing Sousuke saw was her door slamming in his face.

“That went well,” he said to himself realizing he had a lot to learn about his mysterious Kaname Chidori.
