The idea of Amalgam didn’t sit well with Sousuke. Not only did they have little knowledge of them concerning their central base of operations but their interest in the Whispered could be detrimental to everyone. Getting a hold of Black Technology wasn't even the issue anymore, he thought. Black Technology was already being used; he saw that on the battlefield with Venom. It was the idea that with enough of it someone could cause another world war.
“I can only tell you all this,” Tessa continued. “We are taking every precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all known Whispered. They have all been relocated to various places for safety reasons. We, really I, thought it would be best if we brought you here Miss Chidori,” she added with a sweet smile.
“Thank you, Tessa,” Kaname replied with a little smile. But she had to wonder what the woman’s real intentions were. Sure, Tessa was a nice girl, loyal to her men, but she had a real competitive streak when it came to Sousuke.
“Well, that is all, you are all dismissed.” Tessa smiled again and watched as they all filed out of the room. “Oh, Sear gent Sagara, may I have a word with you before you leave?” she quickly called to him just before he vanished.
He froze immediately, knowing this could not be good. The last time he spoke to the captain alone his guilt was too much to bear. He felt like he had hurt her and he was sure she was going to remark on it.
He turned slightly and walked back to her. “Yes, Captain,” he said stiffly.
“How are things in Tokyo?” she asked sweetly.
“They are fine, ma’am,” he replied even stiffer.
“I won’t lie and say I’m not glad that you will be here a little longer this visit. I have prepared a special dinner for tomorrow night to welcome everyone back. It has been too long since Miss Chidori has come to visit us.” Tessa stood there holding herself firmly in place when she really wanted to jump into his arms and cry out how she really felt.
“That will be fine, ma’am.”
Alone in the hallway, Kaname peeked in from the doorway and her blood began to boil just seeing Tessa standing there gawking and acting so idiotic in front of him. Did she have no self-respect? Kaname wondered how Tessa would manage to embarrass herself this time with him. I’m not jealous, she thought. I just know how to spot a lovesick girl when I see one.
The longer she stood there watching the more irritated she became. “Don’t sweat it,” Kurz whispered behind her. She spun around embarrassment evident on her cheeks from being caught spying.
“Come on, I’ll show you to your quarters,” he said waving her to follow.
They chatted casually for a while until Kurz took the conversation to a personal level. “Kaname, don’t worry about Sousuke with the Captain. She may have a crush on him but he’s totally loyal to you.”
“Why would I be worried?” she asked realizing she was doing it again—covering her true feelings with ignorance. “What I mean is, I’m not worried in the least.”
“You don’t strike me as the type who would allow another woman to set up camp on her territory,” he said with a smirk.
Kaname inwardly groaned. Tessa did have the ability to just throw herself into strange situations when it involved some kind of inappropriate gesture towards Sousuke. And for some reason that picture of them on the beach she found in Tessa’s locker never left her mind. What exactly did they do on that beach? Why would he even take her there?
“Not to worry, Kurz,” Kaname finally said. “Sousuke and I have an understanding.”
“Okay.” Kurz chuckled to himself.
They arrived at her quarters several minutes later and Kaname was actually relieved to be near a bed. Her feet hurt and her head was still buzzing from the helicopter ride. She thanked Kurz and stepped inside shutting the door behind her. The cot wasn’t much but it would do for a nice long night sleep.
After inquiring about where she was, he headed to her door. He knocked lightly and she jolted awake, having just dozed off. Panic took over from waking in a strange place. “Who is it?” she cried jumping from her cot.
“It’s Sousuke,” she heard muffled from behind the door.
The door opened instantly and she stood there sleepy-eyed and yawning. “What is it, Sousuke?” she said while yawning.
“I wanted to make sure your accommodations were satisfactory,” he said looking away bashfully.
“Nothing else?” she asked leaning against the doorframe with a devious grin. It couldn’t be all he had sought her out for, she thought. Honestly, she had hoped it wasn't the only reason. His demeanor was much more resigned when he was here, as if he couldn’t relax while on the base, especially in front of her; as if he needed to keep up appearances.
“Well, I...that is I...” his words trailed off and he couldn’t figure out why all of sudden that old shyness had returned. He felt as if he was finally able to break through it and here it was again.
“Get in here,” she said grabbing him and dragging him inside her room.
“This isn’t exactly a good idea, Kaname!” he protested but at the same time let her drag him in.
“Just because we’re on Melida Island doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself around me.”
“I am being myself,” he complained backing up against the wall trying to put as much distance between them.
“Oh yeah?” she said crossing her arms over her chest. “Then kiss me...right here...with the door open.” She knew he wouldn’t do it so she saw no harm in challenging him.
Kiss her? On the base? When anyone could just walk in and see them? If his nerves were already at an all time high, this just skyrocketed them through the roof. But if he didn’t kiss her she would get upset and probably scream down the hallways what a jerk he was. He was trying to make progress with her and this would probably show her that he trusted her. Trust was a big issue with him and she knew that. A semi-public kiss might just be the sentiment that would push her into answering his question earlier on the street.
He reached out and took her hand dragging her into his arms. “You never did answer my question, Kaname,” he said wrapping his arms around her waist.
This was definitely not what she had expected him to do! He suddenly appeared different again like before; his eyelids half closed as he stared down at her. It was not a bad change—in fact, she kind of liked it. His eyes were dark and smoldering, a look she had never seen in his eyes before. It made her whole body feel weak in his grasp.
“What question?” she lied, her voice shaking to spite herself.
He let one of his hands move up her back. Oh, how he loved the way her hair just slid through his fingers like silk. He could touch her hair for hours, he thought. It was the same feeling he got when he cleaned his gun, except this made him feel all tingly inside like right after a large test explosion.
“Do you want to be my girlfriend?” he said softly running his hand over her cheek now. He wasn't quite sure what made him do it but he just wanted to feel her skin beneath his fingertips. She was so soft, almost like finely grained gunpowder.
“Do you even know what that means, Sousuke?” she asked closing her eyes savoring the feel of his hand caressing her cheek. Delicious chills swept up her arms and she physically shivered.
“It means, I only want you in my life, Kaname,” he whispered leaning forward, their lips just inches apart. He couldn’t believe himself. Where was all this coming from? Professing his love for her, kissing her where someone would surely see them; it all was so unlike himself but he liked it. She made him want to be normal, forget about his past and all the pain and suffering he had endured.
He did know what it meant, she thought. And the way he was holding her, his warm breath intermingling with hers, his fingers brushing across her face—no coherent thoughts could even begin to form in her mind. “Then, yes, Sousuke, I will be your girlfriend,” she whispered just as he claimed her lips in very soft slow kiss.
Her mind swirled and she instinctively grasped the front of his shirt pulling him closer. Their bodies pressed tightly together now, she now grasped his face in her hands holding him firmly, possessively. This was it, she thought, they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. It was like waking up after being asleep for years. In his arms she felt like she belonged, like this was where she was meant to be all along.
Something was pressing into her, she thought shifting uncomfortably against him. Then it hit her and it must have hit him as well because he bolted backwards his face as red as a beat. What a disgrace! He wanted to kick himself for letting that happen! If he was trying to keep respect between them this was not helping!
“I’m-sorry-I-need-to-go-I-think-I-hear-my-commanding-officer-calling-me!” he said very quickly then dashed from the room slamming the door closed behind him. Kaname giggled to herself. Oh, that Sousuke...he really didn’t know a lot about dating and relationships. She smiled dreamily as she laid back down on the cot closing her eyes.
There was a definite change in him tonight, she thought. He was going to have to understand that certain things were just beyond his control, even she knew that. She was sure he would be more comfortable with her as time passed just like kissing her was no longer the fiasco it once was between them.
Her last thought was of Sousuke’s embarrassment as he rushed from the room and she giggled as she drifted off to sleep.
The entire base was darkened and silent except for a few watchmen walking around here and there. In the wee hours of the morning was when the shadows came to life, creeping around the room, watching you while you sleep. The darkness taking form looming over you completely unaware of the danger lurking just feet from your cot.
Kaname shifted slightly a small moan escaping her lips. Such a beauty, so elegant and tempting, the intruder thought. But he wasn’t supposed to touch her, strict orders from the boss. He slunk back into the shadows knowing his time would come. It was almost too good to be true, her coming here and making his job a lot easier. And he looked forward to her struggles and cries for help, he thought with a wicked smile.
