Chapter 9: Not a Problem

Sousuke’s sleep was nothing to brag about, he thought as he threw his legs over the side of his cot. He had spent most of the early morning hours tossing and turning, thinking about Kaname and how he had shamed himself in front of her. Why could he not control himself physically all the time? He had accustomed himself to thinking about the most non-sexual things when he was around her just to avoid such a mishap. But this time, he was so taken off guard by the way she felt cuddled close in his arms, the warmth of her skin beneath his fingers...

Stop it! he thought shaking his head. It was going to be a long day and he needed his wits about him. He had planned to check his equipment and test it to see if it needed any servicing. It was imperative that he be 100 accurate or he could jeopardize his next mission. He grabbed his guns and laid them out on the table preparing them for cleaning and inspection.

He was deep in thought when Kurz swung his door open a crazy smile on his face. “Morning, Sergeant Somber,” he remarked walking to the table.

“Kurz,” Sousuke replied with a short nod.

“Did you find Kaname last night?” Kurz leaned against the wall lazily as his smile widened. Sousuke stopped what he was doing and slowly looked up, his face mortified. “What is it?” Kurz asked suddenly concerned.

“I may have done something wrong,” Sousuke said his voice shallow and weak.

“What the heck did you do this time?!”

Kaname was just approaching Sousuke’s door when she noticed it was open and she stopped dead in her tracks when she heard voices. Kurz was apparently there and he and Sousuke were having an intense conversation by the tone of their voices. She leaned her back against the wall next to the door straining to listen.

“I don’t know if this is an appropriate subject for discussion,” Sousuke said his voice low but still audible.

“Look, whatever happened couldn’t be that bad.”

Sousuke closed his eyes silent for several seconds deep in his own thoughts. “Kaname deserves better than me, Kurz.”

“Are you crazy?” Kurz asked pulling up a chair and sitting down.

Kaname wanted to run in and scream at him for even thinking something so stupid. He was more than what she had ever wanted! Why would he think such a thing? Is that how he really felt about her; that he was lower than her, beneath her somehow? If anything she envied the way he held himself, the way he always reacted so smoothly under pressure. The idea of him thinking he was...

She let out a piercing screamdoubling over as a sharp pain shot through her head. Kaname...a voice echoed through her mind; something familiar yet foreign at the same time, invading her, violating her. Kaname...it rang again, this time with more pain. Her head felt like it was being torn apart, sharp and insistent, probing deeply.

A loud cry escaped her lips as she fell to the floor grasping her head. Anything to stop this, her mind screamed. Her stomach turned over and she grasped the thin air for something, anything, as the room began to spin wildly beneath her. Another scream twisted from her lungs so loudly it echoed down the halls and all she could do too keep herself from spiraling down that black tunnel in her mind was to think of Sousuke.

Both of them heard her immediately and rushed to the hallway. Kaname lie there on the floor and Sousuke dropped instantly down taking her into his arms. She was pale and sweating, her body rigid and tense.

“Kaname?” Sousuke said pulling her close.

Kaname!...the voice cried sending another jolt of pain through her, this time ten times more intense and she grasped the front of his shirt tightly in her fist as she twisted in his hold. At this time, more people had come rushing down the halls from all the commotion and Kurz knelt down to assist Sousuke.

“Kaname, can you hear me?” Sousuke asked loudly.

She screamed his name loudly then succumbed to the blackness that so insistently was trying to drag her down, her body going limp in his arms. He lifted her up holding her closely, “I need to get her to her quarters.”

“I’ll get Tessa,” Kurz called as he ran off.

Sousuke carried her down the hall to her room and laid her gently down on the cot. This was the part of her he was not accustomed to; the mysterious Whispered part. He knew so little about them, only that they possessed information that could make someone’s army very powerful. He had never seen her have an episode of this magnitude and it was actually scaring him. Would this happen often? he thought as he stared down at her motionless body. Did this kind of mental stress cause damage to her? He was worried and at the same time he didn’t know what to do. He felt so strange.

“Is she alright?” Tessa asked flying in the room.

“She is unconscious,” Sousuke replied solemnly.

Tessa crossed the room to where Kaname lay and knelt down beside her. “Can you give me a minute, Sergeant?” Sousuke nodded then left the room.

“You’re not used to this,” Tessa whispered to herself as she took Kaname’s hand almost in a sisterly manner. She closed her eyes and reached out, reached out to Kaname’s mind, softly, calmly but only found darkness.

Kaname...can you hear me?

Silence.

Kaname, it’s Tessa. Who contacted you? Did they say their name?

No...Kaname’s voice replied faintly.

Sleep. This ordeal has taken a lot out of you. You will be fine.

She pulled away and leaned back on her heels. Someone tried to speak to Kaname and she had no idea who it was. The thought made Tessa shake with anger. All their differences aside, Kaname was her friend and she’d never let anything happen to her; even if it meant crossing that dutiful imaginary line that in the past had stopped her before.

She stood slowly and walked over opening the door. “Sergeant Sagara, please come in,” she said calmly. “Sergeant Weber, please come in as well.”

Once they were inside, Tessa turned to face them a look of fear in her eyes. “They know she is here,” she said her voice quivering. “But I do not want to worry Miss Chidori any further. We will have our scheduled dinner party this evening as planned but I need you two to have your eyes and ears fixed on any unusual activity or behavior.”

“You think the mole is here...at Melida Island?” Kurz asked astonished.

“I can’t be positive but I have my suspicions,” she added in a low voice. “Tomorrow we will all board the Tuatha de Danaan first thing in the morning where I will instruct you further on your orders.” She smiled sweetly to assure them things would fine. “She will sleep for a little while. But under no circumstance should she be alerted to this, is this understood?”

“Yes, captain,” they both answered strongly.

“Please let Melissa know as well,” she said as she walked out. “See you both at the dinner tonight.”

“You alright, buddy?” Kurz asked Sousuke once Tessa had disappeared.

“My only concern is for Miss Chidori.”

“I’ll find the Sergeant Major and let her know what’s happening. You take care of Kaname, alright?” Kurz said walking to the door.

“Affirmative,” Sousuke replied walking to stand by her bedside.

Kurz walked down the corridor his hands fisted at his sides. If he ever found the traitor in Mithril himself, he would personally gouge his eyes out for this. If there was one thing he learned in Lebanon, it was to watch his back no matter what the circumstances were. Letting your guard down could only lead to trouble and it was now at a critical high.

Melissa was in the Officer’s Lounge reading a magazine when he found her. “Sergeant Major,” he said sitting next to her.

“What is it, Weber?” she asked glancing up from her article.

“We need to talk.”

Sousuke sat diligently beside Kaname his thoughts lost in what had just happened. The whole idea of a mole in Mithril was not the news he wanted to hear. This jeopardized his position and he needed to stick even closer to her than usual. No more walking to school alone, in fact he would insist she sleep at someone’s house instead of alone, perhaps Kyoko’s. No doubt Wraith knew of this and said nothing, he thought with a sneer.

Suddenly Kaname bolted upward and threw her arms around him burying her face in his neck. He instinctively wrapped his arms around her closing his eyes. She stayed there, safe in his arms as she sobbed quietly on his shirt. He didn’t like this. It was his job to protect her! How could he protect her if he couldn’t see his enemy? How could stop this from happening again?

“Sousuke,” she whispered between sobs.

“No one is going to hurt you,” he replied his jaw twitching in anger. “This is not a problem.”
